The programme started with lighting of lamp and welcome address by Dr. Mrs G. Ramyad, Head Decentralisation of Music and Dance. Eleven items were scheduled to entertained the audience. The programme was presented by young children of the institute who displayed their talents with a lot of grace and charms.
Those who could not attend the programme can now look at these pictures and appreciate these colourful artistes.

Mahatma Gandhi Institute, Mauritus,

The Mahatma Gandhi Institute organised the End-of-Year Children’s Programme on Saturday 20 November 2010 in the auditorium of the institute. The children gave a brilliant performance of the skills that they have developed in a short span of two years in the field of Indian Music and Dance. This is a cultural programme which all parents await at the end of every year. Every parent would like to see his or her ward performing on stage at such a young age. Behind this performance stood all the staff of the School of Performing Arts who had put up all their efforts to prepare such charming and wonderful young talents to come on stage. It was a real pleasure to watch these children performing live in a houseful of audience. The auditorium was fully pack. Standing accommodation was made available to all those who came late for the show. Remember next time to come on time, or else you might not get standing place also. The audience got the opportunity to witness young performers in various disciplines like Bharata Natyam, Kathak, Tabla, Violin, Vocal Hindustani and Carnatic. Truly speaking the audience was mesmerized.

They were very enthusiastic and wanted to learn the language of their forefathers. TSU has promised to help them and put up a school with a teacher to teach spoken Telugu to the adult learners very soon. They were also very keen to learn how to make “Muggu”. Sanjiva Appadoo, a very devoted member of the TSU was very active to show the design of “Muggu”. He showed the children and adults the techniques and the secrets of making “Muggus” in a very quick manner. The children were amazed with his artistic ways of writing names with colours. A few pictures for your appreciation. Reddy L prog

Sunday 28 November TSU was in Chemin Grenier, a village in the south of the island. There was a big enthusiasm. Many children and parents came to participate in the activities of the TSU. The hall was  fully packed. After the children many parents also participated in the reading activity and encouraged the young to continue reading and speaking the Telugu language. Parents were more interested in the film show. They asked to have more such activities in future.

The Telugu Speaking Union continues its reading activities on a regional basis. The response has been amazing.

Sunday 21 November TSU was in Goodlands, a village in the north of Mauritius. The Telugu association in that village participated fully in the reading activities  and the film show for children. The best readers were awarded souvenirs from the Telugu Speaking Union. Sweets and refreshments were also served. Parents in Goodlands are good. They are curious to see how their children read a language which their ancestors spoke when they came to settle here 220 years ago. Today Telugu is taught in Mauritius in all state schools where education is free. A few snaps for your appreciation.

Mandali Venkata Krishna Rao Samskruti Puraskaram

Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy has said that conservation of Telugu language, culture and heritage should begin at home, though the State government has been doing its bit to the cause.
Speaking after presenting the “Mandali Venkata Krishna Rao Samskruti Puraskaram” to the Mauritius Andhra Mahasabha here on Thursday, the Chief Minister said though English was playing a vital role in our lives nowadays, there was every reason to conserve our language and culture for we would be known by the future generations only through them.
People could play significant role in conserving the language by practising it at home and outside and languages like English should be used only where they were necessary, he felt.
Plea for funds
Chairman of the Legislative Council A. Chakrapani stated that the Telugu language had united people and played a key role in the formation of Andhra Pradesh. Former Minister Mandali Budha Prasad requested the Chief Minister to allocate funds to the Mandali Venkata Krishna Rao International Telugu Centre in the Telugu University for propagating the language.
President of Mauritius Andhra Mahasabha K. Ramana said Telugu people living there were doing their best to conserve the language and culture and pass it on to the future generations.
Andhra Pradesh Formation Day and Ugadi festivals were government holidays in Mauritius, Mr. Ramana stated.
Vice-Chancellor of Telugu University A. Bhumaiah and others participated.
